WASHINGTON, D.C. /CitizenWire/ — In Recognition of International Literacy Day, the Gingrich Foundation has recognized Reading Is Fundamental as its September Charity of the Month.
For nearly 45 years, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) has provided books to children to foster a love of reading and develop skills that are critical to learning. To date, RIF has given away more than 380 million books to children. Last year alone, through its Books for Ownership Program, RIF provided 15 million new books to 4 million children in all 50 states.
"RIF is committed to continuing its legacy of providing books to the millions of under served children in this country," said Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of RIF. "Studies show that having access to books has positive behavioral, educational, and psychological outcomes for children, and we will continue our efforts to inspire more children to become lifelong readers."
"As American students return back to school, Reading Is Fundamental provides an opportunity for millions of children to discover the joys of reading," said Callista Gingrich, President of the Gingrich Foundation. "With memories of this program from my childhood, I am pleased we can support RIF's important work."
As the nation's largest children's literacy nonprofit, RIF programs reach children in a variety of settings including schools, community centers, homeless shelters, and hospitals. RIF inspires children to read by giving them the power to choose books based on their own interests.
Through a network of 400,000 volunteers, RIF motivates and encourages children and families to discover the joy of reading.
The Gingrich Foundation is a domestic non-profit corporation founded by Callista and Newt Gingrich to support charitable purposes.
