U.S. Department of State Hosts TechCamp Bangkok to Build Digital Literacy of Civil Society

WASHINGTON, D.C. /CitizenWire/ — From March 20-21, 2012, the U.S. Department of State will host TechCamp Bangkok at Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand. TechCamp Bangkok is the sixth TechCamp supporting Secretary Clinton’s Civil Society 2.0, an initiative which builds the digital literacy of civil society organizations around the world.

TechCamp is a signature program of Civil Society 2.0, and is a two day training event through which the State Department pairs leaders in the technology community with civil society organizations to provide training, resources and assistance that enable civil society organizations to harness the latest connection technologies to build capacity and advance missions.

More than 60 civil society leaders from throughout Thailand will come together to get hands-on training in a variety of areas ranging from social media use, online organization, digital safety, mobile applications leveraging and more. These civil society organizations will be poised to use connection technologies to grow their networks, communicate more efficiently and be able to keep pace with the changing world.

In announcing Civil Society 2.0, Secretary Clinton said, “This organized effort will provide new technologies to civil society organizations. We will send experts in digital technology and communications to help build capacity.”

To date, TechCamps have trained more than 350 civil society organizations from more than 45 countries around the world. Connection technologies build new networks of relationships, enhance skill development, and create new avenues for communication. Adoption of these tools by civil society organizations will help support the missions of these groups as well as broader social goals of democracy, transparency and good governance in the 21st Century.

After Bangkok, additional TechCamps are planned in Lima, Peru, Tel Aviv, Israel and Ramallah, Palestinian Territory.
